Welcome to the Basel Carnival

Basel Carnival is not only the biggest carnival in Switzerland, it has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017. This is hardly surprising, as creativity, humor and joie de vivre can be discovered on every street corner.

Basel Carnival

365 days of carnival fever

Here you can find out what goes on during the long period when Basel prepares for the most beautiful three days of the year, and what happens during the carnival itself.

Badge

The Blaggedde is a must-have

The badge is more than just a decorative pin: it covers part of the costs of the creatives and thus makes them independent of political and economic influences. It is therefore your commitment to the Basel Carnival.

Background information on the Basel Carnival

The satire for which the Basel Carnival is known far beyond the country's borders was once created in protest against the authorities.

Rules of conduct

Rules of conduct at the Basel Carnival

To make the carnival a positive experience and to ensure respectful cooperation, we ask you to observe the following:

  • Basel Carnival is a time of joy and celebration, and everyone should feel comfortable and safe and therefore behave respectfully.
  • Racism, xenophobia, sexism, verbal abuse and insults, disparagement of those who think and feel differently and all other forms of discriminatory behavior are not in keeping with the spirit of the Basel Carnival - but behaving decently and in accordance with the law is.
  • Faces with face paint, cardboard noses, jester's caps, swaying and bellowing as well as excessive alcohol consumption are frowned upon at the Basel Carnival and we ask you to refrain from doing so.
  • Enjoy the carnival!

For your safety

  • The best way to protect your hearing is with hearing protection, which you can get free of charge at the sales stands of the Fasnacht Committee on Marktplatz, Barfüsserplatz and Claraplatz; on Tuesday also on Münsterplatz.
  • We recommend using public transport or parking your bike or e-bike outside the carnival perimeter (Cortège route and city center).
  • You should preferably give your children the "Pätty" badge from the police with your telephone number on it - this can be obtained from police stations and the Fasnacht Committee.
  • It's better to leave your dog and other animals at home.

Carnival and humor

  • The Basel Carnival is a themed carnival. The themes played out can be political, socio-political, critical, trivial, complicated, sad, funny, mocking, sophisticated or undemanding and much more. They can make you smile or cry and they can leave you speechless.
  • Anyone who dares to tackle a controversial topic should - as with all other topics - do so in a carnival-like manner, i.e. it should be humorous, satirized, intrigued, criticized and/or praised; (almost) all forms of creativity are welcome and tolerated (as long as they respect the rules of conduct).
  • The Fasnacht Committee is of the opinion that any topic can be addressed and acted out. Religious topics can also be presented in a humorous way. However, a line must be drawn with religious acts; religious feelings should not be hurt.
  • The Fasnacht Committee does not see itself as a censorship authority. On the contrary, the proceeds from the sale of badges are intended to protect the carnival from commercial and political influences and to guarantee its independence. The Fasnacht Committee cannot and will not issue orders, but only recommendations. It can subsequently exert influence on the subsidies.
  • We respect traditions and at the same time are keen to ensure that the carnival can continue to develop, as it has done for centuries and will continue to do.
  • We would like to thank all critics for challenging us and all like-minded people for their support.
