At the turn of the 20thcentury, Fasnacht was celebrated on a far more modest scale, and the organisation was rather haphazard. In Grossbasel, on the left bank of the river, the «Quodlibet» society organised parades and masked balls. Its counterpart in Kleinbasel - across the river - was the «Wurzengraber» society.

Some Fasnacht societies and Schnitzelbank groups toured the streets and inns independently of the events organised by the two associations. Collections were also organized.

The local tourist office eventually got together with the two Fasnacht societies to form the Fasnachts-Comité in 1910, an independent official body charged with organising Fasnacht.
